Ancient Maple Street Trees Cut

I was dismayed this weekend to see the removal and pending removal of about

24 ancient Maple trees along Maple Street.
Can you tell me who is responsible for this and why ? Can anything be done ?

    CL&P is resonsible for the tree cutting. I was asked to sign a consent form for Lewis Tree Service to do the work. The contact person is Jim Haiko 860-819-2538 or CL&P customer service # is 1-800-286-2000. My children were sad about it too.
