Illustrators Exhibition

I’ll be joining several local picture book illustrators (Lane Smith, Mercer Mayer, Nancy Tafuri, Carl Chaiet, and Victoria Chess) for an exhibit at the Washington Art Association from May 27 - June 18th.

The opening on the 27th from 3-5pm will include a book signing and spontaneous illustrating of a wall of the gallery space (known as ‘graffiti’ back in Brooklyn, but genteel art in CT).

Please drop by if you get a chance; should be fun.

Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Sanctuary

The Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Sanctuary is dedicated to protecting waterfowl and their habitats through research, conservation action and education.

The Sanctuary is one of the largest non-profit waterfowl sanctuaries in the United States. Situated on the private grounds of S. Dillon and Mary Ripley’s summer home in Litchfield Connecticut, the Sanctuary is home to over 40 species of waterfowl - dabbling and diving ducks, geese and swans - as well as to some exotic wetland species, including the East African Crowned Crane, the Demoiselle Crane, and the Chilean and Caribbean Flamingos.

The Sanctuary is open for tours in May, June, September, and October where visitors can stroll through the fifteen acres of Sanctuary land and watch waterfowl displaying, splashing, diving and resting quietly among the numerous ponds and wetland habitats. Tours during other parts off the year can be arranged on request. Off-exhibit areas are reserved for propagation and research.

MPHA Semi-Annual Meeting on May 9

While the winter was not as bad as some had predicted, it is always a wonderful part of Spring to have the robins back on our lawns and the forsythia starting to bloom. Not so welcome is the family of bears, who have been sighted on Headquarters Road exploring the area for food.

The Hall has been busy even in the cold days of winter and I thank Laura and Bill Dunn again for their yeoman work in taking reservations and making sure the building is ready for events. As we drive by we can see the daffodils on either side of the front door. We appreciate the time and effort many have put into keeping the Hall looking good, but especially John Baker for the plantings in front. Of course, Bobby Fischer is there for tree lighting, snow plowing and any repairs. It is truly a reflection of support in the community for the Milton Public Hall for which we are all grateful.

Remember that the Semi-Annual Meeting of the Milton Public Hall Association is on May 9, 2006 at 7 p.m. We welcome all members and other interested parties. At this meeting a Nominating Committee will be elected for the purpose of preparing a slate of officers for 2006-08 to be voted on in September. Some of the vacancies to be filled are: President, Vice President, and Membership Chair. If you are willing to serve in any capacity, please be in touch with Web Janssen, Chair of the Nominating Committee, at 567-0762.

I look forward to seeing you on the 9th.

Malcolm Forbes, President MPHA
